Vision & Hearing Screening

Ensuring all students have the tools they need to learn and thrive: Vision and Hearing Screenings

Student Vision and Hearing Screenings

Screenings are a vital part of preventative health care in schools. Washington State law requires annual auditory and visual screenings for children. These screenings include all students in K-3rd grade, 5th grade, and 7th grade, as well as any student who is new to the district, receives special education services, or has been requested to be screened by a parent, guardian, or staff member.

Parents or guardians can request an unscheduled screening by contacting the child’s teacher or emailing the Health Services Department. Please include your child’s name, school, grade, teacher, and any specific concerns.

To opt out of vision and/or hearing screenings, please send a letter to your child’s school each year to indicate their exclusion.

Evaluation by an eye care or hearing specialist is recommended for students who do not pass their vision or hearing screenings. If you have questions about the results, please contact the nurse at your child’s school.

Vision Screening

Vision screenings use an E chart or Snellen chart to assess students’ visual acuity. Students who wear corrective lenses are screened with their lenses on, and each eye is tested separately. A visual acuity of 20/30 or better in each eye is considered passing. Parents will be notified by mail if their child does not pass the screening. Additionally, screenings for farsightedness, nearsightedness, and color blindness are available upon request.

Hearing Screening

Hearing screenings use equipment that provides tonal stimuli at 1000, 2000, and 4000 hertz at hearing level of 20 decibels. Students who do not pass the initial hearing test are rescreened at a later date. Parents will be notified by mail if their child does not pass the second screening.
