January is School Board Recognition Month

I wanted to take a moment to publicly recognize our school board for their selfless dedication serving Bremerton School District’s 4,470 students.

Being a school board Director is not an easy job. These volunteer civic leaders are entrusted by this community with responsibility for an annual budget of $96 million, approximately 750 employees and 11 schools.

The past two years have been even more challenging as the board and District leadership and staff have worked to provide the best possible education for all Bremerton students, while protecting the health and safety of District students, staff, and the entire community in the difficult circumstances caused by the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

We are especially proud that - for the fourth year in a row - the Bremerton School Board has been named a "Board of Distinction" for 2021 for medium-sized school districts (2,001-9,000 student FTE) by the Washington State School Directors Association (WSSDA). To be awarded, boards had to show a clear link between their leadership in applying the Washington School Board Standards and closing gaps that impact student success.

I hope you’ll join me in thanking these elected community members serving the Bremerton School District:

  • Karen Bolton, Ed.D. (serving since 12/2019)
  • John Paul Hurley (serving since 12/2019)
  • Jonee Dubos (serving since 7/2015)
  • Alyson Rotter (serving since 12/2013)
  • Carolynn Perkins (serving since 8/2009)
  • Mitchell Alexander, student representative

Sincerely,

Aaron Leavell, Ed.D.
