Advancement Via Individual Determination, or AVID for short, is a program offered at Bremerton High School and various other locations around the world. At Bremerton High School, we offer AVID at each grade level during the school day. Students in these courses become a tight knit family, staying as a cohort the entire time in the program and continuing with the same teacher for both their Knight Skills class and their AVID class. Students in AVID are usually in the academic middle and have the determination to go to college although most will be the very first in their family to go. These students are the ones who will benefit the most from the support we provide as they take classes out of their comfort zone, such as Advanced Placement and honors level courses.
Skills students learn through AVID:
- Questioning and helping others learn
- Time management and planner use
- Collaboration with classmates and teachers
- Reading and writing strategies for complex text
AVID students also participate in a mentorship program through Bremerton Rotary. This has proven to be a huge benefit. So much so, in fact, that many students have commented that their mentors have kept them going through the tough times at school. These mentors from the Bremerton community volunteer their time one day a month to meet with the AVID students and discuss topics like goal setting, procrastination, responsibility, and teamwork. Students are also learning the value of giving back to the community.
