Highlight on DoDEA Leaders and Digital Resource Bundles

In addition to planning ACT meetings and sharing information at their buildings, DoDEA leaders are lending their instructional expertise to support the compilation of 'Digital Resource Bundles' for each strand of science at each grade level.  The first Digital Resource Bundles are planned to be available for teacher use in the fall when we receive Life Science kits.  Thank you to each of the DoDEA Leaders below for their expertise and commitment to science instruction in Bremerton School District and for their work in helping to Life Science compile digital resources!

    Kindergarten- Hortensia West
    First Grade- Julie Lordon
Second Grade- Jennifer Youngker and Chelsee Bickford
    Third Grade- Desiree Hall
    Fourth Grade- Katie Hubert
    Fifth Grade- Jennifer Erickson

Developing and Using Models in Science Instruction

At the ACT meeting on Mondays, teams from each elementary school learned about developing and using models in science instruction.  Desiree Hall shared a 'Sticky Note Protocol' activity to support quality discourse among students.  DoDEA leaders helped plan this meeting.  According to the exit slips received, 100% of participants learned useful information that they can use in their classroom or building.  During the next several years, the DoDEA grant will make it possible to provide professional development for excellent science teaching.

Lesson Study to Support Science Teaching

In addition to planning ACT meetings and sharing information at their buildings, DoDEA leaders recently participated in our first DoDEA Science lesson study!  A lesson study is an intentional way of planning, observing, debriefing, and reteaching a lesson.  Teachers have a chance to observe strategies, discuss them, then observe again in a second lesson.  Thank you to our science content experts from the ESD Dr. Clancy Wolf and Jeff Ryan.  And thank you to Armin Jahr 4th grade teacher Katie Hubert for teaching the science lesson and hosting the DoDEA leaders at her building!

DoDEA Science PD is part of a critical foundation for increasing district wide capacity for teaching Science.  Over the next several years, our DoDEA grant will continue to provide PD and instructional coaching to support teachers with high quality instruction in Life, Earth, and Physical science, as well as support for incporporating the NGSS science standards.
