Important Message from Superintendent Herndon

Dear Parents/Guardians:

We are shocked, dismayed and deeply saddened regarding the news about the elementary school shooting that occurred this morning in Connecticut. Our hearts are extended to the families, students, and members of the Newtown community.

When incidents like this happen, we re-examine our efforts to ensure personal safety in our schools and are reminded how incredibly important drills are.  We practice intruder drills several times throughout the school year and all students and staff know exactly what to do in the event of a lockdown.

Counselors and school staff are prepared to work with students who want to talk about what happened at Sandy Hook Elementary.  Interventions and counselors are always available to talk with students who may be struggling and may not know how to process traumatic news.

We have attached some information about how to talk with children about traumatic news or events.

If you have questions about your school's efforts, please call your principal or the District Office at (360) 473-1006.

Sincerely,

Lester “Flip” Herndon, Ed.D.
