Fields of Reading

On May 13, 2009, Armin Jahr hosted an after-school event called “Fields of Reading” which combined the efforts and partnerships of many.  This event was a joint grant effort.

  • The Washington Reading Corps is a grant through Ameri-Corp which provides low income schools with volunteer coordinator/community outreach person and two state members.  The grant provides struggling readers with extra support.  Each of the 70 children attending Armin Jahr “Fields of Reading” event received a free book (provided by the Page Ahead Grant).  The local library had a representative on hand to distribute library information.
  • The OC Ranger baseball team took part in the event by taking time out from practice to volunteer at the event.  The 20 members of the team participated in the event by working with the students at different literacy stations.
  • Another partner was the District's Child Nutrition Services.  The department had various stations promoting their partnerships with local farmers emphasizing Washington-grown blueberries and apples.  Child Nutrition Services shared information on Armin Jahr’s Washington-grown grant and provided Washington-grown asparagus to snack on during the event.
  • WSU’s Nutrition Extension was on-hand to provide nutrition education as they are partners promoting Washington fruits and vegetables in the classrooms.

Working together, our kids succeed!

Thank you to all our partners!

Principal’s Message

This year we are continuing to focus on increasing our students’ skills and abilities in reading and math. Students who demonstrate a need for additional assistance in either reading or math are given additional, focused instruction to help them close the gap between their skills and the grade level expectations. We continue to focus on providing all of our students with frequent practice on basic math facts, as well as working to increase their problem-solving abilities and overall confidence in working with numbers. We have worked diligently with our part-time Academic Coach and our instructional leadership team to help teachers improve instruction and increase our students’ math skills, as well as their performance in reading, writing, and science. We continue to have full-day Kindergarten for all of our students, giving each one of them the opportunity to develop strong academic skills, and have noted that our students who have accessed the full-day program are continuing to demonstrate high levels of achievement in first grade.
We continue to recognize and reinforce positive behaviors in our students. We use a Positive Referral system where staff and students can refer students to the Principal to be recognized for pro-social behavior. We also have our Self-Managers program to recognize and reward those students who consistently follow all of our school rules, who do their very best each day, and who complete their classroom and homework assignments. In addition, we have added a Meaningful Work program where students can apply for small, but important jobs around school. Each of these programs has had a positive effect on helping students develop and demonstrate positive choices and behavior.
Our staff is committed to providing our students with focused, high-quality instruction and learning activities, never forgetting that children also need a staff that will love and care for them as individuals and help them develop socially and emotionally. This year, our students came to school ready and eager to learn and have demonstrated both academic and social growth. Together with the support of our parents, we are having another highly successful year.
