OUR CHALLENGE
Keep our traditions alive!
For 70 years, Memorial Stadium has served as a showpiece for sports and other events in Bremerton. Now, a new community-driven fundraising project called “a Field for Future Knights” is hoping to preserve this landmark facility for years to come.
Every year, Memorial Stadium plays host to high-school football, regional track meets, and soccer matches. However, to keep the grass field safe and playable, the Bremerton School District must limit the field’s actual usage to about 20 activities per year. By taking this field out of play, it leaves fewer options for local sports and other groups to hold practices, events, and games in our community.
WHY SYNTHETIC TURF?
Over the past decade, synthetic turf has become an increasingly popular alternative for communities, high schools, colleges, and professional sports teams, trying to balance increasing athletic and community needs. The newest synthetic turf products offer the same bounce, texture, and resistance found in natural grass. Plus, its durable, flat playing surface has been found to greatly reduce the ankle and knee injuries associated with the uneven terrain that accompanies natural grass.
By using an artificial surface, such as synthetic turf, we can protect the stadium field from excessive wear and tear, while saving taxpayers money that would otherwise be spent maintaining a grass field.
Ultimately, synthetic turf will create a perfectly level playing field that can be used year round, regardless of weather conditions. This means more opportunities for athletes and community members to use the field, track, and stadium.
THE BENEFITS OF TURF
• Substantially reduces sports injuries
• Dramatically expands Memorial Stadium’s availability to 24 hours per day, 7 day a week
• Increases Bremerton’s opportunity to host regional athletic championships, concerts, and multi-cultural events
• Cost effective: synthetic turf will require little or no maintenance costs
• Environmentally friendly: artificial turf doesn’t require water or fertilizer, making it a healthier choice for environment
• Supports Bremerton’s growing reputation as a community that values youth athletics and healthy lifestyles
HOW CAN YOU HELP?
With the challenge in mind, the Bremerton School District and members of our community are joining together to renovate the track and install synthetic turf at Memorial Stadium. The total cost of this project is about $1.3 million dollars. About $800,000 has already been committed from the District’s capital project budget. Now, we are hoping our community will join us in raising the last $500,000 needed to make Memorial Stadium, one of the best sports complexes in the West Sound!
Any donations made to “A Field for Future Knights” are tax deductible. All donors will receive a certificate. Those who give over $100 will receive special recognition at Memorial Stadium. Checks should be made payable to the Bremerton Schools Foundation and mailed to:
