2011 United Way Campaign is Nearing An End

The 2011 United Way Campaign is nearing an end. Every year we hear tidbits of information that the economy is slowly coming around yet there are statistically more families in our District needing the support from programs like the United Way.

As we near the end of this year’s campaign I wanted to share a few statistics regarding the United Way of Kitsap County.

Last year, Bremerton Foodline received 35-40% less in donations than they did the year before;

  • In the last five years, the homeless student population grew from 316 students to 555;
  • Homeless shelters and transitional housing in Kitsap County are at capacity and are turning families away every day;

Many of you have shared with us that these statistics are impacting students in Bremerton Schools every single day. If you have not yet filled out your donation form, there is still time. The deadline is November 28, 2011 so if you still want to participate, please forward your completed United Way form to your building coordinator.

On behalf of our students and families, thank you for your donations to the programs they rely on!

How Can You Make a Difference This Holiday Season?

To help fill a big void in our community, the Salvation Army is opening Sally's Camp Two, an emergency family shelter, and the only family shelter in Kitsap County.

Why another shelter? If a homeless woman has a boy over the age of 11 they cannot stay at the ALIVE women's shelter at this time. There just isn’t the room for the much-needed privacy of the pre-teen/teen age group children. A true family emergency shelter, Sally's Camp (an indoor tent city), will run for 6 months 24/7 and bring some of our counties most vulnerable into a safe environment. The ultimate goal is to help the family transition to permanent housing and re-enter society.

What can you do? Visit the Salvation Army Bremerton on Facebook for a list of supplies, donate your time to help with organizing donations, serving meals, lending an ear….. As always the gift of a monetary donation is always welcome. Send your check to: The Salvation Army, PO Box 886, Bremerton 98337 in any amount with "Sally's Camp" in the note line.

Attention Ameritas Plan A Dental Enrollees

Good afternoon! It has come to our attention that employees who selected Ameritas Plan A as their dental insurance may have been encountering problems regarding their incentive coverage levels. Due to an error in start dates, many employees were entered in at the 70% coverage given to first year employees instead of their correct incentive level of 80, 90, or 100%. We have contacted Ameritas and the issue should now be resolved. If your dentist bills Ameritas and the claim comes back at the wrong coverage level, please let us know as soon as possible and we will have it corrected within one business day so your dentist can resubmit the claim. Again, this only pertains to employees who selected Ameritas Plan A. Sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused. If you have any questions feel free to contact Katie Mahaney by phone (473-1021) or email at katie.mahaney@bremertonschools.org . Thanks for your patience!
